Mississippi Tort-Reform Miracle - 3 years young

The voodoo of tort reform in Mississippi is really just starting. So, the state's governor Haley Barbour can expect many more big bangs such as bagging the new Toyota plant and having medical lawsuits go down four times in the past three years.

It was in 2004, reports Jon Kalahar on WLBT 3, that Barbour became governor and finished up the work of his predecessor in transforming MS from a "judicial hellhole" to a model of a fair, predicable legal system.

No slouch at promoting this tort-reform miracle, Barbour in essence has morphed into an economic-development ambassador. He has been effective in enlisting others to be foot soldiers in carrying the message. For example, medical doctors, particularly OB/GYNs, explain why they started their practices in MS or why they have decided to stay: A lower risk of lawsuits and therefore lower malpractice premiums. According to Kalahar's article, for each doctor who practices in MS 52 other jobs are created.

Barbour's political career will be interesting to follow.
