Volker bailed on Reagan because he felt that he was expected to play second fiddle to politics. Which Greenspan was willing to do. Now, it is likely that Greenspan committed the same sin as Colin Powell, in that he likely figured he could direct things behind the scenes if he folded in public

Republicans are an arrogant lot and even with their fall from grace, they continue to believe they are far superior to the Dems. Hence, their unshakeable loyalty to the party even as they watch Republicans screw things up for the country. Powell and Greenspan should know better but unfortunately, they don't.
