The other factor is that most people sink a steady stream of "capital improvement" dollars into a home. I always had a project or two going on in my house, but my wife takes it to a new level. I never imagined what a significant fraction of our budget would go into home improvements. The only way I can keep from coming unglued is the fact that at least *some* of that money comes back later down the road, as evidenced by the recent quick sale of our home.
