I recently read the Gettysburg trilogy that Newt Gingrich wrote. One of the themes of the book was the the Civil War was an entirely new type of war, where the Union was able to bring its industrial power to bear to supply the soldiers on the front by bringing in armaments and supplies by railroad.

Lincoln made a comment in the book marveling that you could travel from Washington, DC to Chicago in the lightning fast time of 3 days, whereas it had been a much longer journey before.

Imagine going from a transportation system where average speed was 5 or so mph to one that would get you there at 30 mph.
