Obama Derails Reid's FEC Deal

Roll Call is reporting that Senator Barack Obama blocked a deal Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell signed off on that would have allowed controversial FEC nominee Hans von Spakovsky and three others to pass the Senate confirmation process on a voice vote. The deal could only go forward if no Senators objected. Obama objected.

Last week, the Senate Rules Committee sent von Spakovsky's nomination to the floor of the Senate without a recommendation. At that time, committee Chair Dianne Feinstein of California said "I don't feel that this is an unbiased individual that we would confirm to go on the FEC." She allowed the nomination because traditionally nominees to the FEC advance in groups of two and four. Sinking von Spakovsky would have also sunk the other four nominees.
When the nomination passed the Rules Committee, Obama strongly spoke out against it.

I strongly oppose the nomination of Hans von Spakovsky to serve a full term at the Federal Election Commission. His record of poor management, divisiveness, and inappropriate partisanship makes him an unacceptable nominee to the FEC. I am particularly concerned with his efforts to undermine voting rights at the Civil Rights Division during his tenure at the Department of Justice. The FEC needs strong, impartial leadership that will promote integrity in our election system. Hans von Spakovsky is not the right person for the job, and I call on President Bush to send Congress a new nominee.
The relatively bold move by Obama has implications for his presidential candidacy. Within the party, Obama risks the ire of the leadership for undermining Reid. Within the party's base, Obama has already drawn praise.

Law blogger Rick Hansen explains why Obama may have a strategic advantage against Republicans, who may have to give up on von Spakovsky.
