They hadn't endured an era with no regulation. Such an era hasn't existed, at least not in US history.

And the regulations companies most often fight for, aren't the imposition of some fair referee to make everything more fair and competitive, but rather barriers to competition that favor the companies requesting the barriers. To continue your analogy they are pushing for having a referee who is biased for their team.

Government is necessary to society, like it or not.

Complex regulations that favor large incumbents over their competitors isn't necessary to society, or a necessary part of government. You treat opposition to any expansion of government as if it was a call for anarchy. That's either dishonest, or obtuse or both.

Frankly government is society.

Nonsense.
