They then have an advantage over girls whose brains stopped growing well before "hard" subjects like maths and science were seriously introduced.

Mq, you cannot be serious about this.

My brain stopped growing a long time ago, and in fact I have no doubt has shrunk as the number of neurons and the number of connections between them has become less as I age [I lose a few million every Carnival season], but this obviously doesn't mean that I have become less intelligent [don't ask my wife, however]. On the contrary, age and experience brings wisdom and a growing fund of knowledge which equips me to better deal with the world around me.

Why should girls' brains be any different? You don't honestly think that an adolescent boy is well equipped to deal with a complex world whereas an adolescent girl's ability has diminished because her brain has stopped growing [if in fact it has stopped, which I think may not necessarily be the case].

I think the physiological basis of intelligence is not hormonal as I think you suggest but lies instead in the ability of each individual's brain cells to make connections with other brain cells. The more networked a brain is, i.e., the more connections one has between cells, the more it can do. Thus, the more connections, the higher the mental horsepower an individual can deploy. Which explains why drugs and excessive alcohol are not good; they destroy brain cells and their conections much like a grand mal epileptic seizure does.

But differences based on sex? Bah. I'd look elsewhere for explanations, if there are indeed any.
