One of the reasons we know that Ann Coulter was lying or mistaken, and it could be either, as she doesn't actually research or fact check the crap she says, in that piece Wayne posted, was when she said "all phony soldiers are Democrats." First, many, many vets exaggerate their experiences in the service, and this has nothing to do with their political affiliation. Also, perhaps the most famous example of someone who exaggerated and got caught is named Pat Robertson.
Pat always claims to have been a combat Marine in Korea. But that's not the way those who served with him remembered it. He was a general's gofer who never saw danger, according to them.
Now, most GOP politicos don't serve at all, so Pat can be commended for having answered his country's call. No service in Korea during the war was that much fun. And I wouldn't mind him embellishing his experience a bit. But when Coulter says nobody does that other than Democrats, she's lying through her teeth. As usual. BTW, that does not mean I believe that Pat can leg bench press 7000 pounds. <G>
Also, any famous person can find someone who served with him to slime his time in the military. My experience was that I served with hundreds of different people in different capacities in different countries. Not all of them loved me and I felt the same about some of them. Still, they had to call on the Swift Boat Liars to go after Kerry, because those who served on his boat liked him and thought him to be a heroic figure, and who knows who Ann dug up to get her sleazy ammo on Gore. Well, NEARLY anyone can be remembered less than fondly by other military personnel, but nobody remembers having served with GW Bush in Alabama. <g>
You serve in the military for years. You have your good days and your bad days. Nobody is heroic 24/7 for three or more years. It's called real life, which the GOP just doesn't get. |
