From the biography, it was said that as a very young boy, he used comedy as a way of deflecting humiliation from other kids for his weight, which was excessive even then. He became the class clown. The teacher told his parents that the kids were actually laughing at him not with him. So, it seems that over the years, comedy became a well-built defense against the loneliness he felt. Perhaps his weight embarrassed him more than he let on.

He was also plagued with serious guilt over his overeating and drug and alcohol abuse. Matt Foley was a caricature of a Roman Catholic priest/counselor at a school he attended. Matt Foley was the priest's actual name.
