For the life of me, I don't understand why you don't put all the dots together. Saddam invaded Kuwait because he didn't think anyone would step in to stop him, let alone the US. Why? Because the US had been supplying him with aid and military assistance all during the 1980s even though America's official position was that Saddam was a brutal dictator to be avoided. Offically, America said little when he gassed the Kurds. But then we gifted him with helicopters that supposedly were for agricultural use but could easily be converted for military purposes and used to gas large populations. This kind of interaction went on for ten years. Even a few days before Saddam attacked Kuwait, the US gave him another nice gift package.........even as DC was rife with talk that Saddam was getting ready to invade Kuwait. No one was more shocked then Saddam when we intervened and stopped him.

First that didn't answer the question. Your gripe seems to be that we're involved at all in the ME.

If there was a question, I answered it over and over again. What I have said is that American participation in the ME has made us enemies. Why that is complicated: we are an easy target is clearly near the top but we also have supported some of the worst dictatorships in that part of the world. Our interference has caused the death of many people and considerable destruction. You don't think people are going love you for that, do you?

Second, Saddam invaded Kuwait because he wanted an empire. Thats why he invaded Iran. Its why he offered deals to both Mubarak and King Hussein of Jordan to jointly invade Saudi Arabia and split it between them. And its why he ultimately invaded Kuwait. Sure he thought no one would stop him.

Third your discussion of US involvement with Saddam during the '80's leaves out 1) that he was at war with Iran whom we considered the more serious enemy at the time and 2) that the vast bulk of Saddam's arms came from the Soviet Union, China and France.

And why was Saddam better than Iran? It makes no sense to support one over the other except for the fact the Iranians didn't want the dictator that we liked......the Shah.

I think its very hard to discuss anything with you because you are very partisan. Sorry.
