>Paul and Libertarians are much further left than you believe. On economic issues, the left hates corporate welfare, illegal immigration (which destroys the American worker's bargaining power) and the Fed. The right loves all of these things<
I think we are having definitional issues here.
IMO, hating the Fed, IRS, IMF, all social programs, etc... is all to the political right. Almost by definition that includes corporate welfare, illegal immigration, massive defense programs (actually offensive programs) etc....
The thing is, there are places where libertarians and the left are in total sync. That's why there is some attraction from the left. The typical libertarian would be totally against wire tapping, national "offense" as opposed to national defense, anything that infringes on privacy and personal liberties (like poker) etc... because those things are considered an expansion of government. Some republicans would be in favor of those things while the left would not. But some of those things only recently became part of the republican party when the neocons took control (Paul even complains about that).
However, overall, I think if you asked the typical libertarian whether he considers himself closer to the right or left, he/she would say the right/republicans because the economic issues are so huge. |
