RE: "The closest analogy I have is with the SONY Trinitron TVs. Each year the price seems to stay the same for each screen size but the feature functionality improves with each model year."

A similar analogy is the price of computers. "Now wait a minute," you might say, "this guy is crazy!"

I acknowledge that the price of any given model declines rapidly over time. However, the price for a "good home-office computer system" seems to stay the same or increase slightly over time. For instance, 18 months ago I purchased the newest general multimedia computer (a Micron PC-150 MPC Home Pro), which was at that time the latest and the greatest Intel processor available. The standard configuration was $3,100. Just a few weeks ago, I purchased another multimedia computer (a Gateway Pentium II 266). This system did not include the top-of-the-line 300 megahertz Intel processor, yet it still cost $3,100, the same I paid for a system 18 months ago.

As you indicate is true with steppers, the functionality improved significantly, but the price I ended up paying was the same.

Best wishes,

I2
