Doren,

Spotlight builds an index of the metadata stored with each file from all the files on hard drives. That index sometimes doesn't capture the metadata from some files. I imagine that might be because of differing metadata formats for older files. Still, Spotlight should capture basic info on each file, such as title, creation date, etc.

There are several databases in the Mac OSX. SQLite is available for developers to use in their applications - I think Spotlight may be using SQLite.

The Maintenance.app has been around for a while - I've had it for about a year. It's pretty useful as a means to clean-up caches, for running chron programs, and other maintenance things that will speed up the Mac if cleaned-up.

Jeff
