Today was school picture day for my 5th grader, Kevin. His hair was quite long and shaggy, as was his brother Brian's. Neither of them wanted their hair cut. Kevin was highly opposed to getting a haircut. I just kept waiting for the school to send me a note home saying that the child needed a haircut or a barrette to keep the hair out of his eyes! He has basically fine straight hair, so it hangs nicely into his eyes. He has mastered the art of flicking of his head to get it out of the way, but then he looks like he is having mini-seizures! It was time for a haircut. Plus, if his school picture is going to be hung up in my living room, I'd like him to look presentable. Not like he just came in from the skate park.
Brian, who was not totally opposed to getting a hair cut. Especially with the homecoming dance this weekend. He is a freshman in high school and his date is a junior. He's pretty excited about the whole thing, even though he is technically not allowed to date. Back to the hair cut. His hair was probably longer than Kevin's, but a 15 you can get away with that more so than at age 11. Brian had ask if he could also get highlights. I told him if he waited until Thursday, that would a possibility, (when a friend of ours could do the hair cut and the highlights.) He opted to not wait.
It is his turn, he gets his hair washed by the beautician. I can hear him talking away to her. And I am thinking he liked that, having someone wash his hair. After the hair washing he gets back to the chair. The girl ask how he wanted his hair cut. I didn't hear what he said. I can hear them talking. I sat there and listened for a minute just when she ask him, "what do you do with your hair, how do you wear it??" To which he replies, "After I get out of the shower in the morning, I dry it off with a towel, and then I shake my head like a dog. And that's what I do with it. How ever it is, is how it is." I started laughing. The girl who was about to cut his hair started laughing and said, "Did you just say you shake your head like a dog??" He was like, "Yeah" Followed by, "I learned that trick from my two dogs." He said it so matter of fact. She was like, "Ok, I don't think I have ever heard it explained quite that way."
It was so funny. I guess part of what was so funny about it to me as a mom, was because he was acting so cool. To look at him, you don't expect that he is only 15 years old, as he is 6 foot tall. Then he opens his mouth and tells this girl that he shakes his head like a dog! |
