Nothing so clear as a "promise of arab nationhood" ever happened, ch. The Brits implied some reward, the Arabs took it as a firm promise of independence over the whole of the ill-defined borders of Arabia. Major misunderstandings and double-dealings all around, and not just from the British sides either. (I say "sides" advisedly here, because during much of this period the India Office and the Foreign Office took opposite sides, literally. The Foreign Office supported the Hashemites and the India Office supported Ibn Saud.)

Read David Fromkin's A Peace to End All Peace if you want a good overview.
