Hedge fund takes stake in Fremont

Fremont General Corp. received a shot in the arm Wednesday as Harbinger Capital Partners disclosed a 9 percent stake in the troubled lender, according to media reports.
Harbinger is a hedge fund that specializes in investing in troubled companies. It is run by Philip Falcone.

The stake was disclosed via a Schedule 13G filing, under which a company purchases a stake over 5 percent, but still lists itself as a passive investor.

The news sent Fremont's stock up 16.49 percent, closing at $4.38 on Wednesday.

Santa Monica-based Fremont General Corp. (NYSE: FMT - News) is a financial services holding company.
