Your lack of religion is in itself a religion. My question is why should your religion be preferred over mine?

First of all, lack of religion is not a religion. The absence of something is not the same as something.

As to your question, I don't want my tax dollars paying for your religion, or paying to host symbols of your religion. Why should I win and you lose? Because it makes for a better living environment for all. You're free to celebrate your religion in your home or with like minded folks. You are not free to force your religious symbols on people who do not share your faith, and they are not free to force their symbols and holidays on you.
