Rambi: "Maslow is known to just about everyone. The word "symbolance" is known to no dictionary and shows up nowhere in my psych texts. And gratuitously throwing quantum physics, existentialism, and the theory of relativity into it (you forgot the kitchen sink) sounded like an attempt to impress rather than be informative."

I did not use the word symbolance.

koan: And therein lies the problem: tear down anyone who wants to rachet up discussion a bit. Call them names and cast aspersions. The fact of the matter is that existentialism, quantum physics and relativity are exactly what people need to understand and discuss; as they are the foundations of all reality!! They are the three most important intellectual concepts I know of. That is why they were put in. Do you know of any ideas more important to understanding reality than those three?

We are discussing reality are we not?

And people who do not understand their importance or are intimidated by the subject matter, dismiss anyone who brings them up as pedantic, and is exactly what is wrong with our culture. We have developed to a large degree an anti intellectual culture.

Discussion of those concepts should be commonplace! I study those subjects every day.

I told both of my daughters that understanding existentialism (you do not have to believe it, just understand it) is the single most important intellectual concept in the world to grasp.

Because understanding existentialism, often frees one from the chains of primitive social dogma!

And our entire future will be based on the phenomena of quantum physics; and everything is relative. How many people really understand that "everything is relative"?

"The sophistication with which one solves an hyposthysis is dependent upon how many variables one can hold in consideration at any give time." unknown

Remember the dark ages? Well that is where we have been headed back to lately e.g. didn't someone recently veto stem cell research for no good reason?
