This article indicates some of Turkey's leaders understand that US Democrats would cause another world war if it might win them an election:

>Turkey Angrily Reacts to U.S. Panel's Vote

United Press International, 2007-10-11

Turkey's president called unacceptable a U.S. congressional panel's measure condemning as genocide mass killings of Armenians in Turkey after World War I.

President Abdullah Gul criticized the Wednesday vote by the House Foreign Relations Committee, saying the decision could work against the United States, The New York Times reported.

Unfortunately, some politicians in the United States have once more dismissed calls for common sense, and made an attempt to sacrifice big issues for minor domestic political games, Gul said in a statement to the Anatolian News Agency. This unacceptable decision of the committee ... has no validity and is not worthy of the respect of the Turkish people.

President Bush had lobbied against the resolution.

In Ankara, the youth branch of the Workers' Party placed a black wreath at the entrance to the U.S. Embassy and spray-painted the Turkish flag on an embassy wall. Protesters also took to the streets around Turkey Thursday demonstrating against the 27-21 vote, which could send the resolution to the full House.

U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Ross Wilson said the U.S.-Turkey partnership was and would remain strong, and that he, Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice regretted the committee decision.<
