Chris, ladies and gents: I have quietly followed many threads on SI for some time. I am not a technical person but am employed in people oriented business. I am an AMTX investor for a long time to come. I also have positions in ZE, ADSP and AXC. I believe that communications began a race with the invention of telephones, radio, TV and now computers. I submit that you are becoming lost in the technicals. All these companies are in the same business and will ultimately merge into one system. Chris is right to say that cable is leading the way. Are there anywhere near the number of homes with computers as compared to TV sets? From a consumer standpoint, the telco's are in the race of their life. Telco's are not encroaching on the cable market but the cable market is going for the entire market. Both delivery systems will win in the short term. Cable is after Video on Demand, interactivity and a slice of the internet/PC home market sales and ultimately phone service. The telco's will have a hard time competeing. Will computers take over the television market? Cable is about to crush the huge video rental market! ADSL on the other hand is the telco's only hope to put off this frontal attack. Telco's are the backbone for business and computers. How many of you will initally purchase an ADSL modem for your PC and then have another box on your TV for cable service? Cable cannot compete with the telcos for businesses but with the huge income from the home market, they will have the money, means and resolve to compete for it all. In the near term... next 50 years, both will prosper and then as the market dictates, they will converge. Please let me know where I am wrong. I may not be a savey investor or come from a technical background but I do know that the majority of the babyboomers who control most of the money for the near term will never become PC literate and will flock to the new gismo's provided on their TV set. Internet on T.V., wow, they will finally have a chance to see what all the flap is about without learning how to use a PC.! (The couch potatoe will finance it all:)
Thank you one and all, you have helped me greatly with my investment decisions and education. My retirement is betting on both of these technologies, and we can't loose so long as we have the right companies. Your patience with my perspective is appreciated.
