The surprise bid by Oracle (ORCL: 22.47, +0.01, +0.0%) of $6.7 billion values BEA at $17 a share. The initial reaction to the bid was so strong that BEA shares rose $4.45 to $18.05 in early trading. The move continues Oracle's recent history of acquisitions, which included a hostile bid for PeopleSoft in 2003.
