You are forgetting the Vietnam war. It wasn't considered popular to raise taxes for it, so much of it was funded through bonds. Until that fell through.

No, it hasn't. At least not to the degree you are talking about. As a percentage of GNP, the deficit from Truman through Carter, kicked up again with Reagan and Bush, and then leveled off and dropped with Clinton. Only to take off again under BushII.

No, I am talking about someone who fell into the 70% or higher bracket. The idle rich generally get their money from investments. Which is taxed at a different rate.

Sure. But they generally don't wrestle with the "work or stay home with the kids" question.

It isn't an obsession thing. Just the general observation that crime and social dislocation seems to track the Gini. Both here and in other countries.
