Will Apple iPod Classic firmware problem make the news and impact stock price?

About a week ago, Apple release a very bad firmware update version 1.0.2 for the iPod Classic. I'm surprised it hasn't been pulled yet with an improved one or just reverting to previous version. Some problems affect Windows users more than MacOS, but seems like all Classics are being impacted by the battery issue. Besides dead batteries, if the hard drives are over-driven, they'd suffer higher failure rates, and if not now, less longevity down the road. This is a valid class action lawsuit waiting to happen if Apple doesn't do something quick.

The firmware reportedly fixed some problems, and enabled the video out. I usually wait to adopt updates, letting others be the guinea pigs, but Apple's recent trouble-free history made me click the update button without much thinking. Had I been more cautious, I would have done a search to make sure there were no early problems, which I did after I encountered the dead battery, and oh, did I find lots of reports on Apple's own discussion board as well as many other sites.

It obvious Apple doesn't have it's A-team working on the Classic, and this is another sign that resources are stretched pretty thin. When was the last time Apple had a major product issue that made the news? Something of the order of the early dead batteries and screen scratching. Compared to these, millions of dead iPods could potentially be much worse. Let's see if Apple does something quick to keep this out of the major news outlets as a minor product glitch not worth talking about or let's it simmer and boil over.

For now, just avoid the firmware update 1.0.2. Move away from 1.0.2 if you're having any problems as soon as another update is available. Don't be quick to adopt new iPod firmware until it's been tested. I hope these big problems are limited to Classics, but maybe other QA problems exist if the real problem is systemic.
