As i read this, its not israel per se that bothered the arabs, it was the betrayal of their nationalism by Europe. The Arabs didn't have that much nationalism as Europe understood it. Their problem with diplomatic negotiations was that they heard diplomatic ambiguity and turned it in their own minds into firm promises for everything their wanted. Then they would make demands for everything they wanted instead of figuring out what they actually had a chance of getting and going for that. The Arab leaders were both cut out of the negotiations and cut themselves out by not knowing how to play the game. As I understand it (mostly from Patai and other sources), Arabs are at a deep disadvantage in European negotiatons because they are culturally unable to make face-to-face concessions.
