I've got a confession for the thread - I'm fascinated by military technology, and i read a lot about it and watch a lot about it on TV. From all this, I've come to the conclusion that ANY country or group of countries that challenged us militarily would be absolutely crushed, and they all know it.

Consider the Iraq war. We invaded there with practically NO resistance and very light casualties. Saddam had seen what we could do in 1991, and he knew he had nothing to stand up to it.
And by 2003, we had LOT more to whack him with. I'm sure he told his soldiers to take off their uniforms, hide their guns and hunker down.

It's the NEXT part where WE'VE got nothin'. I think that's what explains why WE spend 10x more on defense than anyone else - no country has any intention of challenging our paranoia.

They just want to get on with their lives, build their economies and are very content just to pay us lip service and work around us. If we invade some "evildoer" and spend our citizens health care and retirement on attempting to pacifying them, that's fine with Russia, China and India.
