You hit the nail on the head when you say "I'm not sure any chip is considered threatening to AVID."

This is because a company like AVID's true strength is in
software. Sure, AVID and it's competitors manufacture hardware
products. But the bottom line is this: the end user needs
software that can meet their needs. If AVID loses the hardware
battle, they have years of knowledge in the user interface
arena to last into the next millenium. AVID/Digidesign will last
years alone on what they have been able to achieve so far.

If they build on this knowledge AND compete on the hardware end,
there is no stopping this company.

Please note I am not a shareholder, but looking at AVID as an
investment as we speak.
