<Climate is a risk at any latitude>

Okanogan winemaking seems unusually risky. In this La Nina
year, I would not be surprised to see a cold snap in
the Okanogan. It is just a matter of building a blocking
ridge at the right time. Probably happens less frequently
in El Nino years, but I'd have to poke around and find out.
My guess is that neutral years and La Nina years (cool
phase ENSO) have about the same risk.

Although, snowfall is greater in La Nina years from the
Cascades east--deeper snow cover may protect the vines
for all I know. I lived in Wenatchee Wa, a few vines here
and there. My understanding is that the Columbia basin
is about as far north you would want to try vines, and
peaches and cots.

Pushing the limit makes a good article, but Canada really
seems a stretch for winemaking. It is enough that Oregon
and Washington have some good wines. Canada can takeover
the sugar maples as that moves north a few degrees latitude
back east.
