Hi Lawrence,

You may be right about the specs on those ZE set-top boxes. I haven't paid attention to the details though, I did see the mention of SDV. My question is do they intend to use this over the existing twisted copper lines? My point in a previous post (perhaps not presented too clearly) wasn't about the technology in use but rather the market it was trying to satisfy. In my opinion the market it's shooting for is VoD and Interactive/TV and not Internet access

A long time ago we had some detailed discussions on cable vs xDSL technologies as well as wireless. The general consensus at the time was the following:

* there are 2 different needs/markets if you will: Internet Access & VoD/Interactive TV. The 1st geared to the likes of ourselves the second the typical couch potato

* the internet access market isn't best served with cable modem technologies. The reasons being a) cable is shared bandwidth, which isn't suitable for internet. (If I am doing trading and get my data feeds real-time through the internet, I don't want someone in my building downloading a movie to slow down my data feed.) b) cable companies aren't technology oriented and not well suited for mission critical environments. (We have all experienced cable outages, but we don't see phone outage all that frequently.) c) there are yet unresolved security issues with cable modems, which don't matter for the VoD market, but certainly matter if I am doing my online banking through the internet.

* the VoD/Interactive TV market would be best served with cable modems. So, those of us interested in developments in that market feel free to go and invest in those stocks.

So the argument has never been whether or not cable would win over ADSL. But rather which technology is best suited for the Internet Access market. The vast majority of the old time regulars on the AMTX threads have seen ADSL as the winning technology for the Internet Bandwidth problem.

The Americast development is nothing more than a strike by the telcos against the cable companies. Since the latter has interest in entering the phone/internet access market, the telcos are moving into the VoD/Interactive TV market. This was anticipated by everyone eversince deregulation.
