Robert, Harmonic lightwaves built that system for 21st Century. It is a state of the art star HFC network. Also it is a WDM,where it is split into 2 major channels, one for analog video, and the other for digital. The analog, I believe is going to be used for T.V. transmission, the digital channels are going to be used for high speed data. This is just my opinion, but it makes sense. Oh, you could use the analog for voice also, though. New Media whom HLIT just bought, has a digital modem that can receive 10 channels of data at 500 mbps per channel, for a total capacity of 52 mbps downstream. It is the fastest digital modem on the market right now,and will blow the ZE's modems out of the water. Now if HLIT gets the cable modem part also, this system will scream. I might stay will ZE,due to their expertise in the other areas though.
21st Century is building a distributed ring-star (DRS) network based on a state-of-the-art fiber architecture. This architecture, incorporating Harmonic Lightwaves' transmission and element management equipment, will provide advanced network capabilities for delivering high quality video, voice and data services to customers along Chicago's lakefront from Evanston to Hyde Park.
This new build represents the first deployment of a full duplex wave division multiplexed approach to voice, data and video services. By using Harmonic's product line, the 21st Century network will be able to provide narrowcasting to node service areas, allowing delivery of targeted services such as high speed Internet access.
