re: So John I am confused. You are now for monopolies? If you like a monopoly for health care decision making would you like a monopoly to control the petroleum supply as well?

Insurance isn't a typical industry; it's essentially legalized gambling. That's why it is one of the most regulated industries as it should be.

The government controls the payment system for many industries. Take transportation... almost all roads are built with government funds because that is the most efficient and fair way to build roads. That doesn't mean you can't build a road on your own land. Take education... the economy of scale and fairness make government controlling education the most effective solution. That doesn't mean you can't send your kid to a private school. Take police or fire departments or the Defense Department.........

The point is single payer would be more efficient and less expensive, and more fair. And it wouldn't be a monopoly, you could still buy your 'gold plated' insurance if you wanted to. In fact it would probably be very cheap.
