James;

Bio fuels are a disaster

Well not all biofuels, but anyone who suggest they make it out of corn is a nut case - or farmer in Iowa. Biofuels out of waste are an okay - but niche as you say.

However, hydrocarbon energy is the life blood of our economy and will be so for decades to come

Here we disagree. I think our reliance on cheap oil is now our downfall and it will reduce our standard of living - not "maintain" it. The high price of oil is to America because our dollar has dropped off a cliff. The oil producing countries (Russia, Iran, Venezulalia and much of Africa is increasingly commited to China. We are stuck with Norway, Canada and Mexico. The cost of our daliances into Iraq are a further suggestion of what it takes to protect oil supplies - unfortunately because it has gone so wrong - the consequences and cost are more than significant.

We can instead use what we have best - technology - to infiltrate new energy sources. Mush of Europe is already doing that and we are way behind because of missguided incentives. The republican candidates are now grasping that. Not in any little way but in a big way with Huckabee even throwing in God!
