OK, so a family of 6 rather than 4, but $60k is still middle class.

In fact if you just follow the numbers for a family of 6 you see that they are lower than for the median family of four in both NY and CA. I don't consider that point important, but it hardly weakens my argument.

As for transfers and subsidies to the middle class thats most of the federal budget. There isn't and wasn't any need for a specific list, and listing all the programs wouldn't be worth the effort, but for a start Social Security, Medicare (but not Medicaid which goes to the poor), SCHIP (esp. if the proposed expansion goes in to effect), government subsidies or guarantees for mortgages. The first is the biggest government program. The 2nd is the fastest growing large program and will become the biggest. The third is the program under discussion.

If you extended the discussion to targeted tax breaks you have the mortgage interest deduction.

That's just a start, but I listed the most important and/or relevant examples.
