OK, so a family of 6 rather than 4, but $60k is still middle class.

No, they are not.

Either that's a ridiculous statement, or its one that reflects a very narrow definition of middle class.

Most families of 6 with a $60k income would consider themselves middle class. Maybe in a high cost area they would think "lower middle", but in most of the country they would even add the "lower".

A dedicated, line item tax on every ones paycheck.

The tax is a separate thing than the payment. The payment is a transfer or subsidy, the tax is just how its paid for.

You think SCHIP goes mostly to the middle class.

The proposed addition to the program is mostly to the middle class. The program as currently structured maybe not. But it doesn't mostly go to the very poor (who are instead covered by Medicare).

The only government subsidies I know for are for the poor. What mortgage guarantees are you talking about?

hud.gov for starters, although it isn't the only program.

re: If you extended the discussion to targeted tax breaks you have the mortgage interest deduction.

Which applies to every class.

The poor mostly don't own homes. The rich do but are outnumbered by the middle class, and subsidies going to the rich are probably even worse that subsidizing the middle class. The point is the money isn't going to the poor, most of it goes to the non-poor.
