I think there is a bit of calculus behind the retirements. I think the Republicans are hoping there will be a backlash against incumbents in general and the hope is that a lot of the Democratic incumbents will go down and in the districts where there are retirements, it will be a new Democrat vs. a new Republican, so they have a chance to keep the seat.

This is their weak point. Losing their grip on corporate donations means they won't be able to get a larger wad of cash than the Democrats in campaigns. This has been their advantage for decades. Being able to outspend your opponent is a big advantage. Being able to greatly outspend your opponent is almost insurmountable.
