Raytheon Selects Optelecom, Inc. for Next-Generation Air Traffic Control System Upgrade
GAITHERSBURG, Md., Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The Communication Products Division of Optelecom, Inc. (Nasdaq:OPTC), has received an initial contract from Raytheon Service Company to supply active optical fiber systems in support of The Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System (STARS) program. The value of the contract is estimated at $3 million. The agreement provides estimated delivery schedules through the year 2006.
The STARS program, a joint Federal Aviation Administration and Department of Defense effort, will replace systems in Terminal Radar Approach Control facilities where controllers monitor traffic in the 50 miles of airspace surrounding an airport. The FAA has 172 such sites and the DOD has 199.

''We expect continued expansion in this market over the next several years.''
