Cost Plus, Inc. Announces September Same Store Sales
Up 5.4%

OAKLAND, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 9, 1997--Cost Plus,
Inc. CPWM announced today that its same store sales for the
five-week period ended October 4, 1997 increased 5.4% from
the same five-week period in 1996. Same store sales for the
thirty-five-week period ended October 4, 1997 increased 7.1%.

Total sales for the five-week period ended October 4, 1997 were
$20.4 million, a 20.7% increase from $16.9 million, for the
five-week period ended October 5, 1996. Year-to-date, total
sales for the thirty-five-week period ended October 4, 1997 were
$132.5 million, a 21.6% increase from $109.0 million, for the
same period last year.

During September, the Company opened three new stores; one
in Skokie, Illinois, making it a fourth store in the greater Chicago
market, one in Grand Rapids, Michigan and a second store in the
Portland, Oregon metropolitan market. As of October 4, 1997, the
Company operated 67 stores compared to 56 stores as of
October 5, 1996.

Also, today the Company grand opened its sixty-eighth store,
located in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Cost Plus, Inc. is a leading specialty retailer of casual home living
and entertaining products. The Company operates 68 stores
under the name "Cost Plus World Market" in 12 states.
