That is very intersting John, thank you! I knew none of that. And certainly Alberta is light years ahead of other states and Provinces in their thinking. From a quick read though, they would do well to adopt a fund more like Alaska's I think. And it sounds like the citizens know and want that.

We also started about 1976 and now have over $40 billion in our permanent fund and have probably distributed at least another $80 billion to residents and for the functioning of state goverment.

But our three cardinal rules are: to never touch the principle, never invest in Alaska and to inflation proof it every year.

A question: do Albertan's have to pay taxes?

As mentioned, Alaskan's have paid no taxes for 30 years and all alaskan's get a permanent fund dividend check every year. I just had mine put into my checking account for almost $1,700.
