I read an article in a magazine (Smithsonian, I think) that declared genealogy is bunk. The author explained that practically everybody on earth is a descendant of Charlemaine (or almost any other notable of history), and that if you work your genealogy backwards more than a half dozen generation the tree branches out so many ways it's meaningless.

He then proceeded to debunk the DNA trace, saying that a particular ancestor's genes are diluted so much after a few generations that they pass down almost no meaningful characteristics.

To him I would say "So what?" If people want to trace their ancestry, more power to them. They will discover important things about themselves that they didn't know before.
