Part of the reason is the way iran plays elsewhere in the middle east. How to trust folks who fund and support hizbollah, more or less use syria as a client state and are totally, totally rejectionist on the issue of mideast peace between I&P. I do agree that given their proximity to iraq and the fact that a majority of iraqis are their coreligionsists make iran participation in making post saddam policy critical. In the words of Cool Hand Luke, "what we have here is a failure to communicate" and i blame both parties--iran for rejectionism and shiaa arcing and US for inablity to even try to seek common ground when and where it might exist as in iraq.
I go back to the axis evil statement. I was a supporter of the war in iraq but cringed when i heard that line. Has iran done some awful things? Sure but so have other nations. As someone pointed out yesterday they are lightweights in the axis compared to NK or the old china and USSR.
One more thing. Nukes. Iran with nukes will be the single most destatilizing thing that could happen in the mideast. If they werent as dumb as bush, they would realize that and trade them in for something more useful. And if bush wasnt such a dolt, they would get that message out there that we are for sale as in NK.
