The Bombay Company, Inc. Announces September Sales

FORT WORTH, Texas, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Bombay Company, Inc.
(NYSE: BBA) reported today that same store sales for Bombay stores
in existence for more than one year increased 1% for the five week
period ended October 4, 1997 compared to the corresponding period
of the prior year.

Total sales declined 1% to $25,853,000 compared to $26,069,000 for
the five week period ended October 5, 1996. For the thirty-five
week period ended October 4, 1997, same store sales declined 1%,
while total sales declined 2% to $184,298,000 compared
to $188,083,000 for last year.

Robert S. Jackson, interim President and Chief Executive Officer, stated that he was encouraged by the consumer's response to
the Company's new product introductions and the refocused direction
of its traditional and classic offerings which were introduced in
September. "The Company experienced strengthening sales trends
during the month and is cautiously optimistic that the new
merchandise offerings will provide a basis for solid same
store sales growth going forward," said Mr. Jackson.

He further stated that management and the Board of Directors
are fully committed to the direction that the Company has put
in place.
