Also keep in mind that for the majority of the disk space used (i.e. pictures, music, video) compression is a complete waste of CPU time: cycles are spent attempting to compress the file only to realize that you really can't squeeze the files down any more since the file format itself is already compressed. Even if you add up all of your text and office format files, compression really doesn't make sense most of the time. Time Machine doesn't use compression, but rather works to be smart enough to know what needs to be backed up (i.e. it doesn't waste time backing up caches, temp files, and indexes which can easily be rebuilt. Since it's also a smart incremental backup, it also doesn't waste time making multiple copies of things that haven't changed.)
