All this talk about Time Machine and backup utilities couldn't be more timely. My 2 year old Macbook froze while I was doing some light websurfing this morning, with the hard drive making suspicious clicking noises. I forced it to shut down and now won't boot up at all (I get a folder with a question icon). Yikes.

Of course, I've never backed up this computer, but luckily I don't use it for anything other than casual websurfing. There are a few files I hope to recover, so I'm hoping I can mount the drive in target disk mode (while attached to another Mac).

This is only the second HD failure I have ever experienced (the first being a 3G iPod). Hate to make unfounded accusations, but could it be an Apple thing? Macbooks do seem to to have a reputation for HD failure:
