You're exactly right!

What with iTunes music files and video files, which are both already compressed and compacted with the most refined and mature algorithms on Earth, taking up the majority of file space on my hard drive, there is little reason to do compression backups. Plus HD capacity is relatively CHEAP!

As Don says, "... HDs are so cheap everyone should have a 300-500 gig drive in a external case used only for doing back-ups on a constant basis."

I'll have to ask him why he bothers with compression backups? There must be a reason.
