<<It is also not hard to imagine that any of the horror stories suffered by people in countries where they have universal healthcare (stories that people on this thread keep trying to scare us with) can be matched by equal numbers of victims suffering botched healthcare in this country.>>

Mary, the horror stories are everywhere and will never end by putting a label on a system.
Yesterday i shook hands with a Canadian man who was recently released from hospital after ten months stay about three of them in intensive care near death, the dollar cost to him $0.00 other than taxes. He is still financially whole.
If one of the 47 million uninsured in America would have encountered such misfortune , what would be the outcome?

Many Americans probably choose not to pay for health insurance, gambling, and then riding on the backs of those that do, and taxpayers when misfortune strikes.
In Canada everyone supports the system by paying taxes, so there is no easy dodge.

It was suggested on another thread that Canadians should be able to opt out of Canadian healthcare system and so pay less taxes.

My suggestion to him was how would that work??The majority would pay to support the air and ground ambulance and hospitals, hospital emergency units 24/7 so that they would be available for this large ego, when he might need them?? no i don't think so, but if he is unhappy with Canadian care he can skoot down to the Mayo clinic with check book in hand...they provide top notch care and get top notch profit too...Canadians with large wallets are never turned away.<g>

<<Why do we have to fight over this?>>

Many are not honestly looking to make systems better, only interested in there own rhetoric.<gg>Commie eh..lol
