re: So your solution would be for the Feds to rebuild the guy's house?

OK, let's look at different kinds of insurance, OK? What are the primary differences between say health, homeowners and car insurance?

The first difference is that homeowners and car are only necessary if you own a home or drive a car. So to avoid gambling on a catastrophic situation the only one that isn't discretionary is health.

The second major differentiator with health is that it is treated as a benefit of higher level employment. Few employers pay your car or home owners insurance. And that takes health insurance out of a pure "free market" product and puts in the class of a "perk". That creates an inherent unfairness, and probably is a major part of the reason it is so expensive.

My first solution to the problem would be to outlaw employer paid insurance and let everyone shpt or there own. That would QUICKLY lower the price and improve the quality. And you could help the people who couldn't afford a plan with a subsidized program. But that ain't gonna happen, they would hang the politician that even suggested outlawing employer paid insurance.

My opinion is that the second best solution is universal single payer.
