Likewise if middle-aged, middle-class folks who couldn't get health insurance face catastrophic medical costs which might wipe out their life savings. But we shouldn't have to rework the whole system just to handle such cases.

The cost doesn't bother you? It's a huge drag on economic productivity and is going to get much worse. Why should we pay double+ the rest of the world?
