Oh certainly its not a perfectly free market thing, it gets better tax treatment than most other forms of compensation. I don't think it should but its hardly the only way the tax code intervenes in the economy, and to the extent such intervention is a problem the answer is to get rid of the special tax benefit.

The main problem is health insurance is seen as a benefit instead of a product. You may see that you are paying for it but I guarantee most people don't, so it is not held up to the same standards of cost/benefits as would say car insurance or anything else where you write a check.

Even you, the ultimate free market guru would not give up the "entitlement" you hold close to your heart... so you can see a free market is impossible to get to in health care insurance.
