FRAUD CASE -- When then-Sen. George Allen ran for re-election in 2006, questions were raised by news media about his having joined years earlier, while in the private sector, three Virginia high-tech companies that he had assisted as governor.

One of them was Xybernaut, a company in Fairfax County. This month two former executives were among six men charged with making $55 million in fraudulent profits via stock sales between 2001 and 2005. The charges were announced in New York.

Allen, R-Va., could not be reached for comment Friday. His spokeswoman said Allen had left the Xybernaut board of directors in 2000. He believes any fraud or crime that was committed should be fully prosecuted, she said.

During Allen's re-election campaign, he said he saw no conflict in going to work for companies shortly after assisting them as governor, and he said he "got no money out of Xybernaut," which had paid him in stock options.
