Unfortunately, there are several problems with diesel cars.

One is glow plug, Champion make short lived glow plugs.

Then diesels need engine oil heater to work well in the winter; otherwise, the glow plugs over work and melt off heating element and shield too.

Aside from these problem, Volkswagen had the best power and top speed curves. 50 miles per gallon is as steady as you would ever want, in city and on highway going up the hills at 80 miles per hour.

So, if F/GM uses conventional diesels like the old Mercedes; you flip a switch to start the diesel by pressure, it would be easy to maintain. But fuel economy is not perfect when you need turbo compressor(27 miles per gallon).
