Apple IS doing that. They announced on their Q4 conference call that they were going to be opening their first store in China.

Apple goes to Beijing first to take advantage of the 2008 Olympics. Shanghai shouldn't be too far behind. Unclear if it qualifies as "flagship" level.

Nokia is in Shanghai first. Would be interested to see where the 7 open and 18 planned Nokia flagship stores are scheduled and how they compare Apple Store in size and locations. The 4 story Nokia store in Shanghai sure sounds bigger than the typical Apple Store.

Also, how many "flagship" level stores does Apple have and have planned? I'd guess the New York Fifth Avenue location counts as one. Any others? Besides self reporting, what would be a good criteria to designate a store a flagship? Very large area in square feet or retail space? Dominant relative presence in the mall/neighborhood/city?

BTW, who pioneered and/or popularized the "flagship" store concept? Niketown? Virgin Records? Sony? Disney?
